Take a Stand

Interesting question: are there any brands or items you refuse to buy or sell? I don't mean because of the horrible profit margin or bad quality but for moral or ethical reasons. Or does it not matter as long as you can make a buck?

Currently, I have three items/brands I will not buy or sell. They are:

               Abercrombie & Fitch

I refuse to buy anything made by Abercrombie and Fitch. I didn't appreciate their CEO's elitist attitude or ignorant comments. He only wants a certain type of person buying and selling the company's clothing and I decided I'm not that type of person.

My stand was put to the test when I found the above jacket 👆. The men's jacket was new with tags and I could've made a nice profit; but I didn't need the money that bad.

               University of Michigan

I don't buy anything from the University of Michigan. Why? O-H-I-O! My fandom is not for sale 😃😃😃!

                    Donald Trump

Ok (sigh). I'm not starting a political debate. If you want to debate me politically, friend me on Facebook. Anna Robey. We can debate all day. I'm just using this as my example. If your on the other side and don't want to buy or sell anything with Barack Obama on it...great. I refuse to buy or sell anything from Donald Trump. I find his ties or dress shirts in the men's section about once a week. Even if I could make $50 a shirt, I wouldn't buy or sell them. That's just my personal choice.

Are there items or brands you refuse to buy or sell?

Here are a few items I sold today:

  R. Lauren Authentic Dry Goods Jacket

           Cost: $5.99          Sold: $21.99

Steven by Steve Madden Flats 6M

          Cost: $0          Sold: $21.00

You'll find Steve Madden shoes everywhere. I only buy: Steven by Steve Madden shoes in great condition. I got these for free with my SWFL Goodwill loyalty card.

        Gieves & Hawkes Men's Jacket

          Cost: $3.00          Sold: $24.00

You won't find Gieves & Hawkes jackets very often; they are fairly rare on ebay. So when you do find one....buy it!  The profit may not be huge but it will sell.

P.S.: Sorry to my Republican readers for including Trump on my list. I just had to be honest on the items I refuse to buy 👍.

  1. I wouldn't buy anything by any Kardashian. LOL

It's not really something I've thought about, but if there was a label or item that conflicted with my values and beliefs, I'd leave it on the rack for someone else.

And, I'm a Republican, but I wouldn't spend $$ on DT stuff either. Blech! ;)

    1. Haha! The Karadashians is a good one too. I don't buy any of their stuff either.

  2. Hahahaha! You are awesome. I am a sucker for money. I'll buy and sell whatever at this point. I never thought about it honestly but I will now!
One brand I haven't seen you discuss is Lilly Pulitzer. There's got to be tons of it in the Florida area, right? Do you look for it??

    1. Oh I think about these things. It's just how I was raised 😃. If you thought about, what wouldn't you buy?
Honestly I've one bought one Lilly Pulitzer item. Only seen two or three others that I didn't buy. The pair of pants I bought are pretty ugly....in my opinion. Very SWFL looking with pink flamingos. Yikes! I'm not sure if I will buy more or not? Once a brand starts being offered in Kohl's or Target, I avoid it. Even if it's for a limited time. Have you had success with Lilly Pulitzer? If you say yes then I'll give it another try!

  3. Yes. It always sells within days of being listed. It's my white buffalo around here. And when I find a NWT Lilly Pulitzer, I look around thinking I'm being punked.

    1. That is so funny! My heart skips a beat when I find awesome things to resell for super cheap. I usually cover it up in my cart because I just know some crazy ebay seller will swipe it LOL.

    2. White Buffalo?! That's halarious....never heard that one. Going to use that except maybe remix it. Like Yellow Elephant or green tiger.

    3. Whoa! Guess I should treat it like a higher priority. Thanks! I feel paranoid when finding a pair of Jordans or super valuable pair of jeans.

  4. Hmmm - I look at it this way: If you are buying things second hand, then the company already made their profit but not from you. You pick up the item for super cheap and you sell at a high profit - then you just used that brand you don't like as a means to an end. You sold it to someone who wanted it and walked happily away with profit to do as you wish - spread your political message, donate to a cause, or the real revenge - sell a Michigan jacket to buy an Ohio jersey. Conquer and destroy! (My boss is a Buckeye fan.)

The subject is interesting and I'd like to hear other thoughts.

(There was a time that I did not buy Boars Head because of the way they treated a local distributor.)

    1. Interesting thoughts. I've considered how the company already made its money, but then justify not buying and selling it with the thought: I don't want to be the vehicle spreading their name any further. It can be tough when finding something very valuable from a brand you don't agree with.

I never thought of buying and selling that brand and donating the profit to a charity. LOVE that idea. Think I'll do it....except Trump. Haha!

    2. I agree with this line of thought. I would like to think that you are keeping money from the company because someone bought used from you instead of buying new from the company.

  5. I won't buy or sell Ouija boards, tarot cards or anything devil/satan. They go against the things I believe in and I just don't want them in my house. I can't think of any brands. I remember when my son was in middle school he had an abercrombie sweatshirt on. My niece was offended that I let my kids wear that brand. She told me a little about the company, like you mentioned, I had no clue! But like most kids, my kids were over Abercrombie and Fitch as soon as they hit high school, haha.

    1. Interesting!!! I agree on the Ouijia boards. Not for any spiritual reason but they scare me. I'm a total wimp!

  6. What is the story on Boars Head?

    1. Here's a link to the initial story I read: http://tinyurl.com/j8qo2o6

There were updates later and it seemed like both sides had issues. But for a large company like Boar's Head to give a distributor (with whom they've had a 20 year relationship) an ultimatum - meet with us now or take your wife (who has cancer and hit a critical point) to her doctor - well that just made me boiling mad.

Sure - there were customers who needed their meat for their businesses, but damn, show some effing support and get those trucks on the road and help your distributor out while he tries to take care of his wife. GHEEZ. I'm getting pissed again just thinking about it.

And I love Boar's Head products - high quality - it's just so good. But sometimes, you gotta take a stand. I cooled off about two years ago. But thinking about it bothers me again.

    2. Whoa! I read the story. That's frustrating and sadly too common. Business seems to come before health/family in so many situations. I was told at my last job if I went to Birmingham for surgery, I was out of a job. I quit immediately. Business should never come before health or family.

    3. Wow! I can't believe companies can get away with that! I can't believe we've come to this as a human race - job before surgery/health? That is just crazy talk! Good riddance.

    4. Oh it gets worse! Before becoming disabled I ran the largest after school program in SWFL....300 kids a day. I needed to take leave for the second transplant in my knee. I was fired by the school system for taking medical leave. They fired me a week before my surgery, then my body rejected the transplant and I've been disabled since. Luckily, I won a good settlement against the school district but it didn't make up for losing the job I loved.

Part of the reason I now sell on eBay is so I don't have to deal with discrimination due to my disabilities. I've learned businesses are now ruthless and I refuse to depend on anyone else for my livelihood ever again. I can definitely relate to the Boar's Head article (in a way).

  7. Short story to show I come by my style of thinking naturally:

My parents went to NYC for the first time this fall. They are 60 and 62, been together since Highschool. So cute. My mom was REALLY looking forward to riding the carousel in Central Park. I mean REALLY looking forward to it. They go to NYC, find the carousel and she sees its owned by Donald Trump. My mom flat out refused to ride the carousel. She was not giving her money to that man!
My Dad looks where everything is produced before buying. If something is made in the USA....he points it out to everybody and buys more.

So that's how I was raised! My parents always say to speak with my money 😃😃

    1. Awwwww - I'm sorry you mom was disappointed about the carousel ride. But I don't blame her if she feels that strongly about Trump. I hope they had fun doing other things - I'm sure they did. They sound like a sweet couple! And smart - money is power, for sure!

A LONG time ago, my high school bestie and I went to college for a year and then gave it up and moved to Manhattan - we were totally totally CUH-FREAKING-RAZY about the Big Apple. We were young and dumb but holy cow - it was a fun adventure. We sublet a 4 story walk up from an artist ***who did porn on the side*** to pay the bills!!!!! My bestie made the arrangements - I had no idea! Not that it mattered - I was moving up there no matter what.

He was actually talented but his art was ahead of its time - very steam punkish. I never met him. And I bought my own twin mattress to the apt. thankyouverymuch. We lived off South Houston (SoHo) - we could walk to Katz Deli and to the East Village pretty easily. If you stuck your head out of the window and stretched - you could see the Empire State Building LOL.

I have moved up there and back several times - the city and upstate. Funny, but my bestie and I eventually ended up back home! I haven't seen her in years but we could always catch up no matter how long it's been.

    2. That is a CRAZY YET INTERESTING story! I've never been to NYC. Thinking about going this summer. But I don't know? Sounds like a crazy place. Never a dull moment.

  8. You should go! Try to go before July/August because it's sweltering and it won't be fun to walk around outside - and it's a city made for walking. Even though NYC is made up of five boroughs, when you say "city" you are talking about Manhattan.

I would go back just to knock on the door of this place and beg them to let me walk around and look: http://untappedcities.com/2015/12/03/behind-the-scenes-at-the-nyc-sanitation-depts-trash-museum-on-the-upper-east-side/

You sound adventurous - but go with a friend if you can, the first time you go. It will be more fun and less scary. One of my favorite restaurants back in the 80s (!!) is still there - I can't believe it! It's called El Rio Grande. I remember having several of the best Tex Mex lunches ever over there.

If you can stand another long winded reply, we all just had a yummy lunch there and were walking back to the office. All of a sudden, we hear women behind us - oh! . . . eeeh! . . . aaah! And then . . . our friend Tish, screamed too. It seems that this crazy guy was running down the street pinching women's butts! Tish and the woman who got pinched just before her started running after the guy and calling him names but he was fast and got away. After the shock, we all busted out laughing and could not stop. Not trying to scare you - but it was funny even back then.

Oh!!!! Don't hate me but Donald Trump was one of our clients (I was a legal secretary). He wasn't a main client of my boss (we worked on corporate taxes). He actually mentions the law office in his book, Art of the Deal. It was a large practice and he worked with the partner, Gerry Schrager. I'm not sure they are still around - last time I checked I couldn't find a direct website.

But go - it will be fun.
